The
“SLAMMER” is 42 feet long and is Coast Guard approved to take 20 people
out for a day on the ocean.
Rhett Weber is the Slammer's skipper. He is a lifelong Westport
resident and has been out on the ocean since he was little more than a
baby. His father owned the boat when it was called the "Lady
Arlene" and Rhett says he remembers trying to look over the cap rail
when he was just a toddler. Rhett served as a deckhand on the
Slammer when it was named the “Tequila”. He then bought the boat
in 1996 and renamed it the “Slammer” - as in, “WERE GONNA SLAM SOME
FISH!" Rhett loves to take people bottom fishing and enjoys making
the trips really fun experiences for his customers. He specializes
in using light tackle for rockfish and then changing to heavy tackle for
lingcod. Rhett takes folks out on his boat from early spring until
mid-October and then lays the boat up for the winter. He spends
his winters out on the ocean on his commercial fishing boat catching
Dungeness crab. So, Rhett builds up plenty of sea-time making him
one of our most experienced skippers.
The Slammer is not compliant with the Americans with disabilities
act, no vessel in Westport is. The Slammer does have good access for
those that want to fish though. The gate in the side of the boat is 31
inches wide and even with the dock surface. The cabin door is 30 inches
wide and has a 6 inch threshold, a ramp will be provided. The head has a
27 ½ inch wide door and floor space can accommodate smaller chairs.
The Captain and crew of the Slammer are accustomed to the needs of
fishermen in wheelchairs and welcome them. |
